We have all had a taste of what it is like to lose our independence and be confined at home. Not able to go out or mix with friends. Not even as easy to see the doctor or buy groceries without some planning. The COVID-19 pandemic has given us all a sneak peek into what life might be like with limited independence.

But what if it was not an international pandemic and was not affecting everyone in your street, but just you? What if it was your own personal capacity (physical or mental frailty) that was restricting your independence?

An Australian now aged 65 can expect to spend between spend 17 per cent - 25 per cent of their remaining years living with a core or profound disability, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare's research shows. This does not mean we will all end up in residential care or lose our independence, but with the potential for frailty to span a significant portion of our retirement, we need a plan.
