Geriatric medical is a specific study that focuses on the elderly people’s health care. We can also call it as geriatrics. It is the branch of medical study. The field of this study learns about disease, pharmacy, nursing, criminology, dentistry, social work, therapy, psychology, psychiatry, sociology, political science, housing, and anthropology in the relation with elderly people. It is different from gerontology. Gerontology is the study of aging process and its effects.

What is the purpose of the analysis in geriatric medical? It has purposes to promote health for the elderly people by understanding the biological and psychological conditions of them. It also aims to provide the right treatments and provide right medicine for the diseases and disabilities which usually happen on the elderly people. The experts or those who care of aged people, or those who study geriatrics are called geriatrician or geriatric physician. There is no specific requirement about in which age people should be under geriatrician or doctor. It depends on the needs of the patients and the availability of specialists.

To identify the one’s depression, we can use Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS). It is a self-report assessment consists of to identify depression in the elderly. It was developed by J.A. Yesavagein 1982. The questions are in options "yes" or "no", the result range score is divided into range; 0-9 as "normal", 10-19 as "mildly depressed", and 20-30 as "severely depressed”. A diagnosis on the man’s depression is not only based on GDS results but also supported by test and comprehensive diagnostic work-up to make it reliable. In this case, the geriatrician uses geriatric assessment tools to check the patient’s condition – biological and psychological. Those are how geriatric medical works.
